Why are eBay telling me to register as a business?

Many private sellers lately are being contacted by eBay to tell them they have to register as a business seller. Many private sellers are unaware of the basic fact that if they buy to sell, or make to sell, then they are operating as a business. This means not only should they register as a business seller with eBay, but they also need to Register with HMRC as they are liable to pay tax on profits made from operating as a business. In the eyes of the tax office, there is no such thing as a 'hobby seller'.

High volume sellers will be forced to Register as a Business Seller with eBay or face restrictions on their selling activities. If you are genuinely selling a lot of personal items, you can appeal if eBay force business registration on you.
